About the Series CITY BUILDERS: DREAMING OF THE LAND In these collages, I placed hints of nature (leaves, flowers and birds) onto the scaffolding of rising buildings in an attempt to bring a little healing to the plight of people all over the world who have had to leave their farms, villages and towns in order to find work. Often there is no way to return to their country or there is no longer a farm to return to. For many, life in the cities is makeshift. The rapidity with which cities are being built up and expanding out into the farmland in the countries I have visited has been staggering to me. One’s feelings about the destruction of life on all levels due to this degree of migration are extreme unless one thinks of the healing power of nature. The collages are a combination of my photos enlarged and either printed on acetate or dipped in encaustic as well as pieces of monoprints and different papers of varying levels of transparency.
